Drive through the backroads of Ubud to a local village temple that has been exclusively reserved for the group. Under a tented canopy in the main courtyard, guests are served refreshments and receive an introduction and educational briefing on the performance they are about to see.
Kecak dance is said to originate from a Balinese ancient ritual called Sanghyang, aimed as a form of exorcism or to repel evil spirits in which dancers fall into a trance. The dance first appeared in 1930, after Balinese dancer, Wayan Limbak worked together with German painter Walter Spies to create a dramatic performance by incorporating the epic Ramayana saga. 
 [next_column]Whilst the dance of Kecak is arguably Bali’s most popular and recognized, it can be seen in various forms on the island. Rather than delivering a typical ‘tourist’ experience the troupe that perform in this private location is considered the most professional and dedicated to their art, containing some 60 individuals that deliver the most enthralling spectacle. The drama builds as male members of the troupe shoot fire from their mouths into the air keeping the evil spirits at bay. An amazing human voiced orchestra is led by a soloist, who is in charge of indicating the high and low notes, and also acts as narrator. The effect, after a while, is to provide a wall of dramatic sound against which the action of the play is enacted.
